In three evenings you will learn how to lay a bead, and handle all sorts of sharp and dangerous tools. You will be able to complete a small project and leave with lots of ideas and know-how for other projects. This class will teach you the basics of welding, metal work and design, joining, bending and finishing. And you will get dirty!  Offered 2 times this calendar. Tired of the same old "builder special" lights? Well, come and make your own in this class! You will truly display your glass skills in their best light. You'll learn to cut, fuse and shape glass into the right form. Ceiling or wall fixture, you will have the chance to design your own. We will offer a truck load of new techniques. You can compare welding stainless steel vs. aluminum, and pit the plasma cutter vs. oxyacetylene. You will also improve your MIG skills, and spend more time on grinding, polishing, finishing and patinas. Remember, this is a real, live, active, working shop! You will get dirty. Wear closed-toed shoes and long pants. -------------------------------------------------------------- Class 1503- Found and Lost - An Overview Of Lost Wax Casting  ---------------------------------------------------------------    Part One : Found (one day session) A hands-on course that explores making  flexible, reusable molds for the production of repeatable parts. Students will be asked to bring in a minimum of 10 small "found" objects (objects must not have any dimension thicker than1".) We will discuss all the objects in terms of approaches for making flexible molds, then identify the best choices to make. Lab fee for mold materials.   Part Two:  Lost ( 2 days) In this "part 2" course we will take the wax parts we make in our new flexible molds and turn them into "lost wax " glass castings.  Mysteries will be revealed about how the wax is "lost" and how glass takes its place. A variety of plaster mold making methods will be explained. Hand built versus poured? Reinforcement methods?  Hi temp versus conventional plasters?  Each student will make one small 3 dimensional glass casting. -------------------------------------------------------------- Class 1504 - Lecture Series - What Came Before / A Slide History Of The Studio Glass Movement.   --------------------------------------------------------------- Who was there, what they did, and why; in the US and abroad; male and female artists; people you may never have heard about!  For Glass Seccessionists who want to learn a little bit of history, that isn't just about the biggest names in the field. This is a great chance to get the overview you might have missed, from the person who has been in enough places to give the best presentation on it! -------------------------------------------------------------- Class 1505 - Making a Glass and Steel Table  ---------------------------------------------------------------   This is your chance to venture into furniture-making for your home. We will focus on using recycled materials to create a side table. You will get an introduction to welding and then cut and weld a steel frame. You will then cast or fuse an incredibly cool glass top to give you a one-of-a-kind table of your own design. No prior welding or glass experience is needed but not discouraged. There are size limitations for the glass top - not to exceed 18" x 18". Class 1351 - Bas Relief In Glass  (Deep Relief Dry Plaster Casting)

Tired of working flat? Want an easy way to get some real depth into your glass? Here's a fun class where you will learn one of the easiest methods of kilncasting sheet glass to achieve bas-relief sculpture. This incredibly versatile method has endless fine art and architectural applications. In this two day class, we will discuss different types of glass and their firing schedules. Working with color and how it can affect dimensional casting will also be explored. Bring items you may want to cast with this method or choose from our image library. All materials and firings included.

Class 1353 - Architectural and Industrial Lighting Design 

The transmission of light is one of the most compelling features of glass. Using recycled found metal objects and architectural elements, this class will highlight several glass techniques including kiln casting and fusing/slumping sheet glass. You will also learn the basics of safe wiring and electricity. Some glass experience is helpful, but not necessary. Electrical experience is not required. This will be a fun class with lots of hands on projects. As part of this class, we will discuss LED's, light panels, fluorescent and incandescent sources.

Class 1355 - Pate De Verre with Audrey Wilson 

This is a rare opportunity to learn Audrey's own unique style of pate de verre, which is described as alive with energy and effervescent shapes that evoke emotion - just like Audrey herself!

Pate de verre is an ancient and widely varied art form using glass powders and frits melted, fused, and cast at different and specific temperatures to achieve a variety of results in glass. Although her own style is to work intuitively, Audrey will provide a solid base of technical information and a straightforward approach that can easily be accomplished in the studio.  Students will learn how to create two open faced bowl forms.

Class 1313 - Gravity Drops, Handkerchief Vases, and Floral Forms   Are you ready to move past fundamentals, yet still need some more guidance from a professional artist? How about taking a course where you will create a vase by using fusing and slumping skills previously learned. Practice cutting, fusing, and slumping with this two-day class. Students will create a patterned design and then fuse glass together. Day two will consist of cutting the pattern for the slump mold and then allow gravity to take hold of the glass and let it slump into a vase.  Instructor:     Audrey Wilson Dates:          Tuesday eves in October 16 and 23  Time:           7:00-9:30 pm Tuition:        $325

Class 1315 - Life Casting!                                      Learn to make molds directly from the human body! This beginners level workshop will teach you the basics of lifecasting! In this class, we will discus different mold materials available to create molds from the human body.  Students will make molds of their hands and faces and create castings in plaster.  We will discuss approaches to more complicated life casting projects and possible applications.  Instructor :    Sean Hennessey  Dates :         Saturday, December 1st   Time :           Noon - 4:00 PM Tuition :        $350 (all materials provided)

Class 1302- Steel and Glass Sculptural Development For this incredible class, we are teaming up with our sister school at DC GlassWorks to form this amazing collaborative experience. For anyone who has dreamed of creating true sculptural work, this is the class for you! This unusual class will feature 5 Sunday workshops, some discussing sculptural theory, while most are simply hands on with material in both studios. Students will be introduced to the basics of metal working, glass casting and fusing, and aluminum casting. This class is designed for anyone from beginner to the most advanced, no prior knowledge of glass, steel or aluminum are necessary. (An 18" height restriction will be imposed on all pieces). Class 1304- Elements Of 21st Century Reliquaries Reliquaries with internal healing objects have been important cultural objects for centuries. They have been made with a wide variety of materials. But what makes a reliquary in the 21st century? What elements can go inside? Which materials seem most appropriate in modern times? In this class we will utilize clay and glass to explore current concepts in reliquary forms. This class will be split between a clay and kiln cast glass studio, allowing each participant the use of both materials and many techniques. There will be a wine and cheese reception at the end of this workshop to allow friends to see the work in a professional setting.
